Girl, 5, hospitalized after ingesting PCP, Conn. cops arrest mother - Crimesider - CBS News
This is an example in my opinion as to why we need a controlled substance act. To protect those who can't protect themselves. The people who put their addiction to such dangerous and explosive mixtures above the welfare of their children is sickening, but so is treating non-violent marijuana users like criminals.
I say failed, because it fails to properly educate people and hold the people responsible for the damages and deaths that are caused by the products we are being told are the only legal options for everyone.
The CSA is a great idea, the problem is that it over steps the boundaries of common sense and intelligence. It ignores the fact that there are respectable and responsible people in this world. It also ignores that there are legal products that are more dangerous and deadly than some of the illegal products. The priorities of our drug laws are outrageously out of order.
It is disturbing when people can't control the products they choose to use. It's even more disturbing when you endanger the children and neighbors with the manufacturing of these toxic drugs. If it weren't for the violent behaviour that these home made drugs bring about. I wouldn't mind them to being decriminalised also, but since they tend to cause the users to inflict violence on others we shouldn't tolerate their abuse.
There is evidence of marijuana being successful in curbing the addictions to this type of drug. Now, just as it is a crime to drink alcohol and drive, I believe it should be a crime to smoke marijuana in public or while driving. I don't think it should be a crime to grow what you consume or possess marijuana if you use it in the privacy of your home. The law as it is presently enforced basically states that if you possess or use marijuana you are not a respectable or responsible citizen of the USA. Not everyone who uses marijuana abuses it.
Now even though I don't agree with or approve of the daily use of alcohol, over the counter and prescription drugs. I don't deny that they can be used responsibly, even though the evidence proves they are abused just as much, if not more than the illegal products.
Our government spend billions of dollars on this failed policy, plus no telling how much on persecuting, prosecuting and incarcerating non-violent marijuana users. This money would be better used in the educating and assisting the people who become addicted to the products they abuse.
