The definition of one's citizenship in the United States Of America.
My idea of a respectable citizen has nothing to do with what they possess to consume in the privacy of their own home, but has everything to do with how they treat their fellow citizens. It is determined by whether I can trust them to be responsible for their actions and decisions.
I personally don't believe in consuming alcohol, over the counter or prescription drugs, and if I do take prescribed medicines it will only be in an emergency, during surgery, or as a last resort when the natural organic herbs and medicines fail to work. I also don't like the fact that the majority of the foods we consume has been raised with chemicals or have been genetically altered for the purpose of generating higher profits.
I say this because I believe the use of these products on a daily basis violates the laws of God and nature. We are after all an organic product of this world not a piece of machinery. Science by genetically altering our foods have theoretically proven that changing these products will also change the next generation, so who can actually say what damages or health problems we are causing the next generation of people? If through the foods we absorb today can stay in our system how would they react when combined in the womb? Do we know for sure these combinations of chemicals are not affecting the health of our children and possibly our grand-children?
So if for some reason somebody took it upon themselves to consume a man-made product such as alcohol, cocaine, or any number of mind altering products, that is their decision and their cross to bear. I do expect them to have the courtesy to be respective of others by using those products responsibly.
This is where I argue the concept of our government's claim of having a moral responsibility to protect us from ourselves. Morally just because I may not approve of the use of the manufacture products to alter one's state of mind, does not give me the right to treat people like they are scum of the earth. Just as our government may not approve of my use of natural organic herbs and medicines, does not in any way give them the right to treat me like a criminal.
Yes, our leaders have a moral responsibility to the people to protect us from ourselves to some degree, Morally this is to inform us of the dangers that may result from the products we consume, morally they have an obligation to make recommendations, morally hold us responsible for any and all damages and/or deaths that may occur if we choose not accept those recommendations. But morally they have no right to deny us the option to learn from our mistakes. And morally they have an obligation to the people to accept responsibility for the damages and deaths that result from what they claim to be the right choice and only choice for all the people.
